Commit to a path and lock the decision

In shortSay what success looks like, set the predictions and tripwires you will return to, choose the path, then lock the decision.

FrameAlternativesConditionsPremortemHearingCommitmentExecutionReviewDashed: big bet only

The Commitment is where the decision goes on the record. You say what you expect, how you will know, and what would make you turn back.

Answer the commitment questions

  • Success describes what a good outcome looks like. On an everyday decision it is one prediction with a review date.
  • Predictions, on a , are what you expect to observe, each with a date. The dates become the decision's review dates.
  • are what would make you reconsider. Every review checks them. On an everyday decision the tripwire is part of the commitment, since a quick call only stays cheap if someone notices when it goes wrong.
  • Dissent, on a big bet, records who disagreed and why, in their own words.
  • Add items with + Add under each list. Each item has its own Edit.

Choose the path

Pick the path the decision commits to. You can change it until the lock.

Lock the decision

The lock sits under the last section: the Commitment on an everyday decision, the Execution on a big bet. Before you confirm, it shows:

  • the path, the predictions to seal, the tripwires and the first review date;
  • what is still open, such as critical claims with No call yet, questions nobody answered, or a decision with no review date.

After the lock

  • Your predictions are sealed, so later reviews can check them against what happened.
  • Changes become dated additions to the record rather than edits to it.
  • The reviews start on the dates you set. See Review a decision you made.

A question from Greg

After the lock, a short note from Greg, who builds Midfire, may ask what it was like to use Midfire for it. It appears at the top of the decision until you answer or close it.

  • Answer sends your words to Greg as a message. If he writes back, the reply is in Help.
  • No thanks closes the note for good.
Why lock at all

Locking seals your predictions before anyone knows the outcome. A later review then compares what you expected with what happened, not with what you remember expecting.
